Healthcare Reform is well under way in the state of South Carolina. Please call us if you should have questions regarding how provisions in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) and the companion Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act (HCERA) will affect you or your company. Some highlights of the terminology that may be new or confusing, and some of the new requirements are listed below:
*Guaranteed issue coverage for children under age 19 years old. This requirement is effective as of September 23, 2010 in South Carolina.
*High risk pool--A temporary federal high risk pool program available now in South Carolina.
*Individual mandate-A mandate for most individuals to have health insurance or pay a penalty for each month of noncompliance, beginning in 2014.
*Maintaining the status of a Grandfathered Plan for individual and group plans. What are the advantages and disadvantages?
*Tax credits available to many small businesses in South Carolina effective immediately.
*New wellness benefits available to new policies as well as non grandfathered plans sold in South Carolina. Call for details.
*What you need to know before you renew your individual or group policy.
*The health care reform provisions will be phased in as follows: immediately; July 2010; September, 2010; 2011; 2012; 2013, 2014. Please call for further information. Note: some details of the law may change as details of the new law are further interpreted by state insurance regulators.
*As of 12-01-2010 there are no companies in SC who are currently writing new individual health policies exclusively for children under age 19 except for short term policies. Coverage is being written with most carriers with one or both family members covered. These policies offer guaranteed issue for children under age 19.
